Chapter 18

Ryder

Everything had changed.

I couldn’t stop thinking about her. Whitney had wriggled her way into my life, and what had started as a sham to get what we both wanted had become a lot more.

I liked her. Really liked her.

And I wanted her to know that.

I wasn’t sure what the future held. I had no idea where we were going with this fake engagement or how the story was going to play out once neither of us needed the arrangement anymore.

But I didn’t want to think about what the future held—or didn’t hold—for the two of us once all of this was over. We weren’t there yet, and I was going to turn a blind eye to it, pretend like it was too far away to worry about for now.

We would cross that bridge when we got there.

Right now, I wanted to show Whitney how much she meant to me. I wanted to spend more time with her. But we kept our distance from each other, especially at work, so that our arrangement wouldn’t come out and create a mess of gossip.

Which meant that I missed Whitney even though she was on my rotation at the hospital more often—I’d arranged the nurses’ schedules that way myself. I saw her all the time, but we couldn’t spend time together the way I wanted to. Having to pretend was driving me crazy.

We had to get away.

I rarely took sick days or personal leave, which meant I had some time to take if I needed it. And I knew Whitney had a few days’ leave that had piled up, too. I’d checked.

It had taken a bit of work and I’d had to pull some strings, but I was able to get us both time off at the same time. And I’d managed to avoid any suspicion from our co-workers.

“I haven’t taken time off in ages,” Whitney said, looking out of the passenger window as we left Peachwood behind.

“You should take some time to yourself more often.”

She nodded. “I know. But then I always tell myself there are some people who don’t have time. They don’t have the luxury of waiting for me to get back. And then I stay and try to help them, because that’s what we do.”

“I know what that’s like,” I said. “But you can’t save them all. That’s something I had to learn the hard way. What you can do is look after yourself so that you’re fresh and ready to save the ones you can. We owe it to ourselves to not burn out, to not overwork ourselves, to not kill ourselves off in the process.”

Whitney nodded and glanced at me with evergreen eyes. “You’re very wise.”

I chuckled. “I’ve just been through the mill, I guess. I got pretty sick a few years ago. I just didn’t look after myself—I wasn’t sleeping, I wasn’t eating right, I didn’t take time off to process the losses or celebrate the victories. I realized that I wasn’t any good to others if I wasn’t okay myself.
